eBay Account Suspended? Why It Happens and How to Get It Back

Quick answer: eBay suspends or restricts accounts when its systems link them to a risk. Common triggers are a policy or VeRO violation, poor seller performance, failed identity checks, unpaid fees, or a link to another restricted account. Most suspensions are not permanent. Read eBay's email and the MC code in it, fix the cause, then appeal once with clear evidence.

"Suspended for no reason" is one of the most searched eBay complaints in the UK. There is almost always a reason; eBay just rarely spells it out. Here is how to find the reason and what to do next.

Suspended vs restricted: what's the difference?

  • Selling limits: a cap on how many items, or how much value, you can list. You can still sell within the limit.
  • Restricted: some actions are blocked while eBay reviews the account. You may be able to sell partly, or not at all.
  • Suspended: the account cannot buy or sell.
  • Permanently suspended: eBay has closed the account for good, and any new account linked to you will usually be blocked too.

Why is my eBay account suspended?

These are the causes we see most often in the stores we audit:

  • Account linking: eBay connects accounts through devices, IP addresses, bank details, addresses and names. If a linked account was suspended, yours can be too.
  • Identity or business verification: missing or mismatched documents during checks trigger holds.
  • Seller performance: late dispatch, high defect rates, cases closed without resolution, and "item not as described" returns.
  • Intellectual property (VeRO) reports: a brand owner reports a listing, often for using its name, images or logo.
  • Prohibited or restricted items: including items that are only allowed under certain conditions.
  • Sudden changes in activity: a new account listing hundreds of items, or an old one suddenly selling in high-risk categories.
  • Unpaid eBay fees: or a payment method that failed.
  • Dropshipping from retail sites: eBay does not allow you to list an item and then buy it from another retailer to ship straight to your buyer.

What do eBay MC codes mean?

eBay's message usually includes a code such as MC011, MC013, MC018, MC024 or MC027. The code tells you which eBay team took the action and what they want from you. We explain each one in its own guide: MC011, MC013, MC018, MC024 (VeRO) and MC027.

How to fix a suspended eBay account: 6 steps

  • 1. Stop. Do not open a new account. Creating another account while suspended breaks eBay's rules and usually ends in a permanent ban for both accounts.
  • 2. Read the email and your eBay Messages. Note the code, the policy named, and any documents eBay asks for.
  • 3. Find the cause. Check your performance in Seller Hub, open cases, VeRO notices and any recent changes to your listings.
  • 4. Fix it before you appeal. End the listings involved, resolve open cases, and update your documents and payment details.
  • 5. Appeal once, clearly. Explain what happened, what you changed and how you will stop it happening again. Attach documents such as supplier invoices, ID or proof of address.
  • 6. Follow up only through eBay's official contact routes, and keep a record of every reply.

Is an eBay suspension permanent?

Only when eBay says so. Many restrictions are lifted after verification or an appeal. A permanent suspension is rarely reversed, and any new account linked to you will usually be caught.

How to avoid an eBay suspension

  • Keep one account per person or business, with consistent details.
  • Dispatch on time with tracking, and answer messages within 24 hours.
  • Only sell brands you can prove you bought legitimately, and keep your supplier invoices.
  • Grow a new account slowly. Don't list hundreds of items in the first week.
  • Check eBay's prohibited and restricted items policy before listing in a new category.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my eBay account suspended for no reason?

eBay's automated checks usually flagged a link to another account, a verification gap, a VeRO report or a performance issue. The code in eBay's email shows which one.

How long does an eBay suspension last?

It depends on the reason. Verification holds can clear within days of sending documents. Performance and policy suspensions take longer, and some are permanent.

Can I open a new eBay account if mine is suspended?

No. It breaks eBay's rules, and the new account is usually linked to the old one and suspended too.

What happens to my money if my eBay account is suspended?

eBay may hold funds to cover buyer claims. Check your payouts page and eBay's messages for how long the hold lasts.

Can someone help me get my eBay account back?

Yes. An agency can audit the account, find the cause and prepare the appeal. No one can guarantee reinstatement.
