eBay Sales Dropped Suddenly? 9 Causes and How to Recover
Quick answer: When eBay sales drop suddenly, the cause is usually one of three things: your listings are shown less (seller performance, a restriction, listing quality or more competition), buyers see them but don't buy (price, postage, delivery time), or demand fell (seasonality). Sellers often call this "throttling", but eBay doesn't confirm any such setting. Check Seller Hub for performance, traffic and messages first, then work through the causes below.
"My eBay sales have dropped" is one of the most common problems sellers bring to us. Tekovex manages eBay stores for UK and US sellers, and our client stores have passed £1 million in UK sales. This is the checklist we use.
First: what does Seller Hub show?
- Performance: are you Below Standard, or close to it? Check late delivery, transaction defects and cases closed without seller resolution.
- Traffic: did impressions fall (fewer people see you), or did the click and sales rate fall (fewer people buy)?
- Messages and notices: look for restriction codes, listing removals or VeRO notices.
Causes when fewer people see your listings
- 1. Seller performance slipped. A Below Standard rating or rising defects can cut your visibility. See our guide to eBay dispatch rules.
- 2. An account restriction. MC codes can limit or pause selling. See eBay restriction codes explained.
- 3. Weak listing quality. Missing item specifics, poor titles and few photos rank lower than complete listings.
- 4. Old listings. Listings with views but no sales for months can lose ground to fresher competitors.
- 5. More competition. New sellers with lower prices or free postage push you down.
Causes when people see listings but don't buy
- 6. Price and postage. Buyers compare the total. Check sold listings for your item.
- 7. Slow delivery. Longer dispatch times or slower services lose buyers to faster sellers.
- 8. Weak feedback. A recent run of negative feedback reduces trust.
Causes outside your listings
- 9. Seasonality or market change. Compare with the same month last year before changing everything.
Zero views on eBay listings?
If listings show zero views, check they are active and not hidden by Time Away, that they are in the right category with item specifics filled in, and that the account has no restrictions. Brand-new accounts and listings also take time to gain visibility.
A 14-day recovery plan
- Days 1–2: fix any performance problems: dispatch backlog, open cases, unanswered messages.
- Days 3–5: improve your top 20 listings: titles, item specifics, photos and prices.
- Days 6–7: end dead listings and relist your best sellers with improvements.
- Days 8–14: run promoted listings on proven items only, dispatch the same day, then compare traffic with week one.
Frequently asked questions
Why have my eBay sales suddenly stopped?
Usually a performance issue, a restriction, a listing change or a seasonal dip. Check Seller Hub performance, traffic and messages first.
Does eBay throttle sellers?
eBay doesn't confirm "throttling", but visibility in search depends on listing quality, price and seller performance, so a drop in any of these can reduce sales.
Why do my eBay listings have zero views?
Check they're active, not paused by Time Away, correctly categorised, complete, and that your account has no restrictions.
How long does it take to recover eBay sales?
Listing fixes can show results in days. Seller performance recovers over weeks, as new orders replace old ones in eBay's evaluation period.
Should I use promoted listings to fix a drop?
Only after fixing the cause. Promoting weak listings just raises costs.
