How Long Does an eBay Seller Have to Ship? (UK Rules)
Quick answer: An eBay seller has to dispatch within the dispatch (handling) time shown on the listing, counted in working days after the buyer pays. On eBay UK, sellers usually choose same-day, 1, 2 or 3 working days, and eBay recommends no more than 1 working day. If the item hasn't arrived by the estimated delivery date, the buyer can contact the seller and then open an "item not received" request.
"How long does an eBay seller have to ship" is up more than 1,000% in UK searches over the last three months. Tekovex runs dispatch for eBay stores in the UK and US, and our client stores have passed £1 million in UK sales. Here is how the rules work for both sides.
What is dispatch time on eBay?
eBay defines dispatch time as the time it takes the seller to hand the item to the carrier after the buyer has paid. It is set on each listing and counts working days only. Estimated delivery dates are worked out from the dispatch time, the delivery service, the seller's location and the buyer's address.
- Same-day dispatch: the seller sets a daily cut-off time. eBay suggests no earlier than 2pm.
- 1 working day: what eBay recommends for most sellers.
- 2–3 working days: allowed, but buyers see later delivery dates, which can cost sales.
What counts as late dispatch?
A sale counts as late if it is not dispatched within the stated dispatch time, using the delivery service the buyer chose. For items over £20, valid tracking should be uploaded within the dispatch time.
eBay's seller performance limits
- Late delivery (Top Rated): no more than 3% of transactions, or 5 transactions.
- Transaction defects (Top Rated): no more than 0.5%, from no more than 3 buyers.
- Transaction defects (Above Standard): no more than 2%. You only drop to Below Standard if the defects involve more than 4 buyers.
- Cases closed without seller resolution: no more than 2, or 0.3% of transactions, whichever is higher.
- When it's checked: on the 20th of each month, over the last 3 months if you have 400+ transactions, or the last 12 months if fewer.
What can a buyer do if an eBay item is late?
- 1. Check the estimated delivery date and tracking in Purchase history.
- 2. Message the seller through eBay.
- 3. If the estimated delivery date has passed, open an "item not received" request.
- 4. If the seller doesn't resolve it, ask eBay to step in under the eBay Money Back Guarantee.
How sellers can avoid late dispatch
- Set a dispatch time you can always meet, not the fastest one.
- Use a same-day cut-off of 2pm or later, and keep packing materials ready.
- Upload tracking on the day you dispatch.
- Use eBay Time Away for breaks instead of letting orders pile up.
- Choose couriers with reliable first-scan times.
