eBay Fees UK 2026: Every Fee Explained for Private and Business Sellers

Quick answer: Selling on eBay UK is free for private sellers (except vehicles): there's no final value fee, and you get 300 free listings a month. Business sellers pay a final value fee of about 9.9% to 12.9% of the total sale, depending on category. On top of that they pay 30p per order up to £10 (40p over £10) and a 0.35% regulatory operating fee.

Fees are the first thing that decides whether an eBay store makes money. Below is every fee UK sellers pay in 2026, taken from eBay's own fee pages, with a worked example you can copy.

Is it free to sell on eBay UK?

Yes, if you are a UK private seller. eBay removed final value fees and the regulatory operating fee for UK-based private sellers in October 2024. You still pay for optional upgrades. A 3% international fee applies when the buyer's address is outside the UK. Vehicles are not included in free selling.

  • Final value fee: £0 (except vehicles)
  • Free listings per month: 300 (400 with a £19.99/month shop)
  • Listings above the allowance: 35p each
  • International sale: 3% of the total sale
  • Optional upgrades: e.g. subtitle £2, Gallery Plus £2.50

If you sell regularly to make a profit, you are a trader, not a private seller. You must register as a business seller, and HMRC may treat the income as taxable.

What fees do eBay business sellers pay?

Business sellers pay four types of fee:

  • an insertion fee once your free listings run out
  • a final value fee when an item sells
  • a per-order fee
  • a regulatory operating fee

Final value fee by category (no shop):

  • Everything else (most categories): 12.9%
  • Clothes, Shoes & Accessories: 11.9%
  • Home, Furniture & DIY: 11.9% up to £500, 7.9% above
  • Health & Beauty: 10.9%
  • Computers, Tablets & Networking: 9.9% (laptops and desktops: 6.9% up to £1,000, 3% above)
  • Jewellery: up to 14.9%

The fee is charged on the total amount of the sale: item price, postage and any taxes.

Other business seller fees:

  • Per-order fee: 30p for orders up to £10, 40p above £10
  • Regulatory operating fee: 0.35% of the total sale, plus VAT
  • International fee: 1.05% to 2% depending on where the buyer is
  • Dispute fee: £14 per chargeback

How do I calculate eBay fees? (worked example)

A business seller with no shop sells a £50 item in "Everything else" and charges £4 postage.

  • Total sale: £50 + £4 = £54.00
  • Final value fee: 12.9% × £54 = £6.97
  • Per-order fee: £0.40 (order over £10)
  • Regulatory operating fee: 0.35% × £54, plus 20% VAT = £0.23
  • Total eBay fees: £7.60 (14.1% of the sale)

Add promoted listing costs on top if you use eBay ads. In the stores we manage, ad spend is often the cost sellers forget to budget for.

Is an eBay shop subscription worth it?

A shop is worth it once you list more than your free allowance, because it adds free listings and cuts insertion fees.

  • No shop: 30p per listing once free listings run out
  • Basic (£27/month): 250 free fixed-price listings, then 10p each
  • Featured (£77/month): 1,500 free fixed-price listings, then 5p each
  • Anchor (£437/month): unlimited free fixed-price listings

Rule of thumb: if you pay more than about £27 a month in insertion fees, a Basic shop pays for itself.

How to lower your eBay fees

  • List in the right category: the same product can have a lower rate in a more specific category.
  • Stay within your free listing allowance, or move to a shop when you go over it.
  • Keep seller performance high: Top Rated sellers get extra benefits from eBay, and poor performance leads to restrictions that cost more than any fee.
  • Build fees into your price, including the fee charged on postage.
  • Review promoted listing rates every month. Many stores overpay for ads that don't convert.

What is eBay's selling fee?

eBay's main selling fee is the final value fee: a percentage of the total sale (item price, postage and taxes), charged only when an item sells. For UK business sellers it is about 9.9% to 12.9% in most categories, plus a per-order fee of 30p (orders up to £10) or 40p (over £10). UK private sellers pay no final value fee, except on vehicles.

eBay insertion fee UK

The insertion fee is what you pay to create a listing once your free listings run out. Private sellers get 300 free listings a month, then pay 35p each. Business sellers without a shop pay 30p per listing, and shops reduce it to 10p, 5p or nothing for fixed-price listings. Full details: eBay insertion fee UK explained.

eBay UK regulatory operating fee (0.35%)

eBay introduced the regulatory operating fee on 8 April 2024 to cover the rising cost of regulations such as consumer protection, environmental and tax rules. It is 0.35% of the total sale amount (item price, postage, taxes and other fees), and VAT is added where it applies. UK private sellers don't pay it. On a £100 sale, it costs a business seller 35p plus VAT.

eBay car fees UK

Vehicles are not part of free selling. Private sellers pay £14.99 to list a car as an auction or fixed price listing, or £19.99 for a classified ad. Auctions also pay 1% of the sale price (minimum £25, maximum £45). See eBay car fees UK for worked examples.

How much does it cost to sell on eBay UK?

  • Private seller, everyday items: £0 in selling fees (300 free listings a month).
  • Business seller, £50 sale + £4 postage, no shop: about £7.60 (14.1% of the sale).
  • Business seller, £100 sale, no shop: about £13.70.
