eBay Car Fees UK: How Much Does It Cost to Sell a Car?

Quick answer: Selling a car on eBay UK is not covered by eBay's free selling for private sellers. A private seller pays £14.99 to list a car as an auction or fixed price listing, or £19.99 for a classified ad. Auction sales also pay a final value fee of 1% of the sale price, with a minimum of £25 and a maximum of £45. Fixed price and classified listings have no final value fee.

"eBay car fees" is one of the eBay fee questions UK sellers search most. Tekovex manages eBay stores for UK and US sellers, and our client stores have passed £1 million in UK sales. Below are eBay's own published motors fees.

Worked examples

  • Private seller, £3,000 car, auction: £14.99 listing + £30 final value fee (1%) = £44.99.
  • Private seller, £8,000 car, auction: 1% would be £80, but the cap is £45, so £14.99 + £45 = £59.99.
  • Private seller, £1,500 car, auction: 1% is £15, but the minimum is £25, so £14.99 + £25 = £39.99.
  • Private seller, any price, classified ad: £19.99, with no final value fee.

Auction, fixed price or classified ad: which is cheapest?

  • Fixed price (£14.99): the cheapest option, with no final value fee. Good if you know the car's value.
  • Classified ad (£19.99): no final value fee. Buyers contact you and you arrange payment and collection directly, which suits sellers who want to talk to buyers first.
  • Auction (£14.99 + 1%): can create competition for in-demand cars. Add a reserve price (£9.99) so it can't sell too cheaply.

Tips for selling a car on eBay UK

  • Include the registration, mileage, MOT date, service history and any faults.
  • Use 20+ clear photos, including the interior, tyres and any damage.
  • Agree how the buyer will pay and collect before the sale ends. Never release the car or the V5C until payment has cleared.
  • Be wary of buyers who offer to pay more than the price or ask to arrange shipping overseas.
