Did Etsy Ban Print on Demand? Etsy's Design Rules in 2026

Quick answer: No, Etsy did not ban print on demand, laser-cut or sublimation products. Under Etsy's Creativity Standards (last updated 10 June 2025), items made with computerised tools such as laser cutters, Cricut machines, 3D printers or sublimation printers are allowed only if they are based on the seller's own original design. Using bought templates, SVG bundles or clipart as the design is not allowed. The change Etsy made on 11 August 2026 was different: a ban on natural animal fur items.

Many sellers have mixed up these two policies, and searches about Etsy's 2026 rule changes have surged. Tekovex manages Etsy shops for UK and US sellers, and our client stores have passed £1 million in UK sales. Here is what each rule actually says.

What Etsy actually changed on 11 August 2026

Etsy updated Section 2 of its Prohibited Items Policy (animal products) to ban items made from or containing natural animal fur, such as mink, fox and rabbit. It applies even to vintage items. This change does not affect print on demand, laser or sublimation sellers.

The original design rule (since June 2025)

Etsy's Creativity Standards say every item must be made, designed, sourced or handpicked by the seller. For items made with computerised tools, the rule is clear: they must be produced from the seller's original design.

  • Allowed: your own artwork printed on mugs, shirts or tumblers through a production partner, if you disclose the partner.
  • Allowed: laser-cut, engraved, Cricut or 3D-printed items made from designs you created.
  • Allowed: designs created with AI tools from your own prompts, if you disclose AI use in the listing.
  • Not allowed: products made from bought SVG files, templates or clipart that aren't your design.
  • Not allowed: reselling mass-produced items or blank products such as plain t-shirts or tumblers as your own work.
  • Design source: list where each design came from: made by you, commissioned by you, or bought.
  • Bought designs: remove or redesign any listing that uses a bought or licensed design.
  • Production partner: add your production partner in each listing's details and show the correct ship-from location.
  • AI disclosure: add it to the description of any AI-assisted design.
  • Proof: keep your design files and drafts, in case Etsy asks you to show the work is original.

What happens if you break the rules?

Etsy can remove listings that don't meet its Creativity Standards, and repeated problems can lead to restrictions or shop suspension. If your shop has been flagged, fix every affected listing before you appeal, not just the one Etsy named.
