Last-Minute Christmas Sales: How to Sell After the Deadline
Quick answer: After the standard Christmas posting deadline, online sellers can keep selling by offering paid faster delivery (1st Class, Tracked 24, Special Delivery or next-day couriers), selling gift cards and printable gift certificates, selling digital products, offering local collection or delivery, and taking orders for "after Christmas" delivery with a clear message. Then switch straight into Boxing Day and January sales, which are big shopping days in their own right.
It's 21 December. Your 2nd Class deadline has passed and orders drop off a cliff. It's tempting to switch off and start Christmas early. But there's a whole group of shoppers who haven't finished yet: the busy, the disorganised and the people who just remembered they forgot someone. "Last minute Christmas gift ideas" became a breakout search on Google in December 2025. Those shoppers are still there. They just need a different kind of offer.
Tekovex manages eBay, Etsy, Amazon, TikTok Shop and Shopify stores for UK and US sellers, and our client stores have passed £1 million in UK sales. Here's how we keep stores earning in the last days of December.
1. Sell speed, at a fair price
Once the cheaper service has closed, many shoppers will pay for a faster one. Add paid upgrades for 1st Class, Tracked 24 or Special Delivery Guaranteed, or a next-day courier. In 2025, Royal Mail's Special Delivery Guaranteed deadline was Tuesday 23 December (Royal Mail). Update the "order by" message on your site every day as each deadline passes. See our Christmas posting deadlines guide.
2. Sell gift cards and gift certificates
Gift cards are the perfect last-minute product: no postage, instant delivery by email, and the customer often spends more than the card's value when they redeem it. On Shopify they're built in. Make them look like a real present with a nicely designed printable version.
3. Offer digital products
Templates, patterns, guides, online classes, printable art and subscriptions all deliver instantly. If you can create a digital version linked to your products (for example, a printable recipe card set for a kitchen shop), it can sell right up to Christmas Eve.
4. Go local
- Offer click-and-collect from your home studio, unit or a partner shop.
- Offer local same-day delivery within a few miles.
- Promote it in local Facebook groups and on your Google Business Profile.
5. "It's coming after Christmas, but here's something to wrap"
Some shoppers are happy for the gift to arrive later if they have something to give on the day. Offer a free printable "your gift is on its way" card with orders placed after the deadline. Be very clear about the expected delivery date.
6. Get ready for Boxing Day
In the UK, online spending on Boxing Day 2025 topped £500 million, and AI-driven referrals to retail sites on Boxing Day were up 685% (Adobe). Schedule your Boxing Day offer and emails before you stop for Christmas.
- Clear seasonal stock with sensible discounts.
- Target people spending gift cards and Christmas money.
- Promote "treat yourself" and January products such as fitness, organisation and self-care.
7. Look after your customers over the holidays
- Set an automatic reply explaining when you'll dispatch and answer messages.
- Use your marketplace's holiday or Time Away settings if you're closing. See our eBay Time Away guide.
- Extend your returns window for gifts into January.
